On Thursday, Mayor Muriel Bowser provided an update on the rise of COVID-19 cases in the District. Although we saw very few cases a month ago, there has been a sustained upward trend over the past few weeks. The District now reports a moderate community spread, and is uncertain when it will abate. Other jurisdictions report similar problems with the Delta variant of the virus.
Mayor Bowser announced that beginning Saturday, July 31, everyone must wear a mask indoors, regardless of vaccination status.
The Catholic University of America will implement this mandate on campus. All faculty, staff, and students will need to wear a mask whenever they are in a shared space indoors. People who work alone in an office will not need to wear a mask, unless someone enters for a conversation or a meeting.
We will provide guidance in the coming weeks for students in the residence halls.
The best protection against COVID-19 is vaccination. We continue to encourage all members of our community to take this step. Other effective ways to protect yourself and others include wearing a mask, washing your hands, and maintaining an appropriate social distance.
All members of our community are required to report their vaccination status by July 31, 2021. It is critical for the University to have this information in order to make the best possible decisions for the entire community.
